Idolatry
The bible often reiterates the importance of avoiding idolatry. No matter how many times we may read about it, discuss it amongst our friend circles or get reality checked from personal experience, it is very easy trap to succumb to.
If we reflect on how the Isrealites became disgruntled over what appeared to be a lack of progress, they resorted to building a golden calf and attempted to worship it until it was destroyed. When I have read over the passage, I would question how could they be so ungrateful? Why was it so hard for them to stay focused on God and not worship people, places and things?
Then I was hit with my own moments of idolatry in various aspects of my life. I would date someone and find myself slowly and steadily idolizing them. I would be more concerned with talking to them and reduced my conversation time with God. I would rack my brain thinking of ways to please them and not think twice about whether my actions were pleasing to God. I even encountered this in the workplace. I relied to heavily on my employer being my source of security, financially and emotionally, when that position belongs to God.
We know that God is a jealous God and will remove idols from our lives. No matter how much we cry, beg or plead for an alternative outcome, the outcome remains the same.
Therefore, it is important that we make time for God and keep Him at the center. No one or thing should be placed on a pedestal equal to or higher than Him. We should conduct a self check ever so often and assess what has our focus, our energy, our time. Then ask if the same is being reciprocated in our spiritual walk. If not, make the necessary adjustments…this is what I had to do. If a new outcome is desired, we have to shift our mindsets!
